Tennis Team Triumphs!

Your Martin Saints 2025 Girls Varsity Tennis Team. Silver medalists in the the Penn-Jersey Athletic Association.

Five years ago, there was no Martin Saints tennis team.

Four years ago, some ninth grade girls wanted to start one. Coach Dan Donnelly volunteered to lead. Only one of these girls had ever played before. That first year was rough. We played some big schools. We had one win, against a JV team.

But the girls kept at it. Coach Donnelly knew what he was doing, and the girls were great sports, always cheerful, hard working, wise enough to let themselves be coached. They were 3-6 the second year, 6-5 the third year.

This year, Coach Nicole Cochrane joined the team, as well as a great crop of new ninth graders. They went 9-5 on the season, and yesterday, in the league championship tournament, they excelled themselves.

Several individual medals: two bronze, two silvers. Senior Ruth Roberts and sophomore Charlotte Pellathy were partners who won gold in first doubles. And most importantly - the TEAM. They were overall tournament silver medalists.

Let's savor the moment: from absolute beginners to medalists, over the course of one high school career. It's storybook. We are so proud of these students, and so grateful to our coaches.

At Martin Saints, one of the wonderful things about being a new and small school is that if you're interested in starting something, you gather a few friends, and bang, you're in business. Well, maybe there is a little more to it than that, but that's the spirit! This is how we do it!

But wait there is more! This weekend, freshman Tobias Volpe and junior Lucia Volpe will be running in the state cross country championships. We will send a full cross country and soccer recap on Monday!

Basketball and chess seasons start soon...  And the BOYS are starting a tennis team in the spring...
